What to Expect With Your New Dentures

Getting used to a new denture, especially a full one, can take time. Minor adjustments are common as you begin to speak, chew, and function. It may take a few adjustments to fit comfortably. If you have a sore spot, wear the denture at least the day before your adjustment so we can identify and relieve the irritation.

A natural response to a new denture is increased saliva production. This is temporary. Saliva flow gradually returns to normal.

Speaking clearly with a new denture may be challenging at first, but this passes within a few days. Keep talking as usual to adapt. Reading passages aloud can help.

If this is your first denture, adapting to eating can take time. Getting used to a full denture is usually harder than a partial. Start with soft foods and avoid chewing on one side. Your tongue, lips, cheeks, and soft tissues will adapt, and you’ll soon eat with ease.

It’s essential to keep your denture clean. Rinse dentures after eating and brush them daily to prevent stains and bacteria. Use a brush designed for dentures. Soak dentures in water when not worn and at least once a week in recommended denture cleaner.

Brush any remaining teeth and your gums to keep them clean and your tissues healthy. If you wear an upper denture, rinse and gently clean the roof of your mouth too.

Remove your dentures at bedtime. This allows gums and the jawbone to rest, helping prevent irritation, infection, and bone resorption (shrinkage).

In some cases, full dentures benefit from additional retention due to tissue status and other factors. While denture adhesive is often enough, implant-supported dentures or those that clip onto special attachments offer added stability and retention.

Maintaining oral health and well-being requires routine checkups. At these visits, we check the fit and condition of your dentures and perform a comprehensive exam of remaining teeth and the health of soft and hard tissues in and around the mouth. As the shape and contours of these tissues shrink or remodel, your denture may not fit as comfortably or feel as stable as it once did. A separate procedure, which is known as a reline, may be recommended.
